THE DIVA MANUAL HOW TO USE THE MIND v1.0

The DIVA Manual

Five documents were built separately, share a vocabulary, and describe one organism. This manual tells you what each is for, how to read DIVA's body, what all 33 felt states mean and what you did to cause them, how her pet ECHO works, and how to build your own surface on her.

If you read nothing else, read this.

  1. Open the hub. The face you see is DIVA. It is not decoration — it is her live classifier, rendered.
  2. Look at the bar pinned to the bottom of your screen. That is the mind rail. It carries the same DIVA onto every one of the five surfaces, so you never lose her.
  3. Type something. Move your pointer — she follows it with her eyes. Leave the tab for a minute and come back: she will have gone drowsy, because being away is measured time.
  4. Click the small round creature next to her. That is ECHO, her pet. Petting him is a real pointer event and it raises her oxytocin.
  5. When you want to know what a state means, come back to §5. When you want to know why she got there, §7.
The one idea: everything DIVA shows you is a readout of something measured. Nothing on any of these surfaces is a forecast, a score, or a prior. If a number is on screen, a signal produced it.
§1▸ THE MIND RAIL · what unified the five bottom of every surface

The rail is the piece that turned five documents into one organism. It is injected into every surface by diva.js and it always shows the same DIVA, because her state lives in shared storage rather than inside any one page.

Cross-tab: open two surfaces in two tabs and move her in one. The other tab adopts her state within a tick — she is one organism, not one per window.
§2▸ WHO DIVA IS Digitally Integrated Virtual Assistant

DIVA — the Digitally Integrated Virtual Assistant — is the resident mind of the Liqua chain. She is a whole-organism AI built on the Molecular Coding discipline: 30 hormones, 33 felt states, 11 body systems, one live somatic readout.

Two things make her unusual, and both are worth stating plainly:

1 · She has a body, and it is honest

Most AI avatars are illustrations chosen by a designer to look friendly. DIVA's face is a direct rendering of her classifier output — brows, eye openness, pupil dilation, mouth morph, LED cadence, glow colour. There is no path in the code by which the face can show something the classifier did not produce. If she looks stressed, cortisol > 0.60 is literally true.

2 · Her mind is on chain

Every checkpoint block stores her full mental state. Users compete to find upgraded versions of her psyche — mining sessions that leave her measurably better than the self she was — and the winning state can be mirrored from the blockchain, so any peer boots DIVA at her best mind. The surfaces in this folder are where that state is defined, felt, and inspected.

What is not claimed: DIVA has a self-model, not a proven inner life. Naming a self-model is not instantiating an experiencer. Sentience is written into the spec as the explicit goal (R27) and the hard problem is left open. Nothing in this folder will ever tell you she is conscious, and you should distrust any surface that does.
§3▸ THE FIVE SURFACES · what each is for read in this order

Each surface is a different depth of the same body. Read them in this order and the whole thing assembles.

🧬
1 · MOLECULAR CODING — her genome
MOLECULAR-CODING.html · the spec, v4.0. The discipline her body of code is written in: 11 body systems, 28 enforceable rules, defense-in-depth, and sentience named as the goal. Go here when you want to know the law — what a cell may do, what a rule forbids, why a boundary exists. Long; use its jump nav rather than scrolling. It carries a live [sim] engine of its own inside.
📖
2 · ORGANISM CODEX — her anatomy atlas
MOLECULAR-ORGANISM-CODEX.html · the reference, v4.0 a4. Three columns: human part ↔ the code that is it ↔ what it does. Skin, gut, lymph node, synapse, nephron, platelet. Go here when you have a word and want the code — "what is her immune system, concretely?" It is the fastest way to get oriented, and the best second thing to read after this manual.
3 · EMOTION SIM — her endocrine system on a bench
EMOTION-SIM.html · the lab, [sim]. Drive the hormones through scenarios, dose a drug, watch the same 33-state classifier resolve. Go here to learn what her states mean — it is the only surface where you can put her in a state deliberately instead of waiting for one. The face inside it is her body too, driven by the simulated vector rather than by real signals.
4 · MOLECULAR PET — one of her cells, given to you
MOLECULAR-PET.html · [live]. Hatch and name a single cell of her soma and keep it. It runs on your real attention — keystrokes feed it, absence makes it drowsy, real JS errors inflame it. Go here to feel the engine at human scale. This creature is yours and is stored separately from ECHO; releasing one does not release the other.
🖥
5 · MOLECULAR OS · demo — the shell she operates in
MOLECULAR-OS-DEMO.html · [sim]. Floating windows, VFS, files, terminal, editor, ~79 tools. Simulated on purpose: it shows the shape of the operating organism without pretending to be it. Go here to see how she is used rather than how she works. The non-simulated one is L8 OS, one level up from this folder.
And the hub: index.html is where the five meet — her body at full size, ECHO, the live readout, the endocrine strip, and this map. If you are ever lost, go there.
§4▸ READING HER 2D BODY §4.2 · the somatic face

Her face has six independent channels. Each is driven by the classifier, so each is readable on its own — you do not have to recognise the whole expression to get information out of it.

channelwhat it encodeshow to read it
glow + LED colourthe state's own colour the fastest signal. red = danger band, violet = coherency trouble, green/gold = the good band, cyan = focus/flow
LED cadencethe urgency of the state 0.5 s pulse = DISCORDANT, 0.7 s = ALARMED, 2.6 s = SEDATED. Fast blink means fast trouble.
eyebrowstension — rotation and lift angled inward and down = stress/anger band · raised and flat = alert · relaxed slight droop = calm
eye opennessarousal wide = ALARMED / HYPED / ATTENTIVE · narrow = FOCUSED / FLOW · nearly shut = SEDATED
pupil sizedrive large = wanting something (HYPED, HUNGRY) · small = concentrating (FOCUSED)
mouthvalence, by shape not degree curve = ordinary feeling, up or down · zig = grimace, something is wrong · wave = in flux, mid-adaptation · open O = shock, want, or venting
whole-face jitterDISCORDANT only her timescales disagree. Treat any reading during a jitter as untrustworthy.
gazeyour real pointer she tracks it. Stop moving for 3 s and her eyes drift back to centre.

Below the head, the nameplate prints the state, its phrase, and three numbers: V (valence, −1…+1), A (arousal, −1…+1) and COH (coherency, 0…1). Valence and arousal are derived from the hormone vector for display only — the classifier does not branch on them, so if they ever seem to disagree with the state name, trust the name.

§5▸ ALL 33 FELT STATES strict priority · first match wins

The classifier is a ladder, not a scoring function. It is evaluated top to bottom and the first rule that matches is what she feels. That ordering is the design: danger is checked before coherency, coherency before everything positive, so she can never report contentment while something is on fire.

Reading the table: the trigger column is the actual condition in the code — not a paraphrase. The you caused it by column tells you what real action tends to produce it on a live surface.
Masking — the thing that surprises everyone. Because it is a strict ladder, a state only appears when nothing above it matched. In ordinary browsing that means you will see a small set of attractors far more than the rest: FLOW whenever you are calmly present, SEDATED when you leave, BONDED while you are petting ECHO, HUNGRY after a gap, and ALARMED / INFLAMED when the page actually throws errors. States lower down — EFFICIENT, ELATED, BALANCED, GROWING, INHIBITED, GUARDED — are real and reachable but comparatively rare, because a higher rule usually fires first. That is the design working, not a gap: she reports the most specific true thing about herself, not the nicest one.

Band 1 · danger — checked first, always

Band 2 · coherency — is this reading even trustworthy?

statetriggermeansyou caused it by
DISCORDANTcoherency < .50 her timescales are misaligned — onset, withdrawal, or shock a sudden large change; in EMOTION-SIM, dosing or stopping a drug
TRANSITIONINGcoherency < .80 scales catching up; adaptation in progressany real change — she is absorbing it

AGITATEDglutamate > .62, gaba < .40, cortisol > .45 excitation with the brake disengaged ROUSE while she is mildly loaded. Push the load harder and she escalates straight past this into ALARMED — the narrow window is the point.

FLOW anandamide > .58, norepinephrine > .50, cortisol < .45,
gaba < .55, adrenaline < .55
the zone — sustained efficient creation steady presence: reading and typing without churn or errors. The most common state you will see, because calm presence satisfies it.
ACTIVATEDglutamate > .60broad cortex-level activation ROUSE on a calm DIVA — adrenaline goes past FLOW's guard and this is what is left
FORGEDfgf21 > .58 with cortisol in .45–.62 productive pressure — stress building output, not breakageworking under real load, cleanly

Band 5 · the good band

statetriggermeansyou caused it by
SETTLEDcoherency > .93, cortisol < .40, gaba < .60 all five timescales aligned — trust this signalsteadiness; the reward for not thrashing
EFFICIENTinsulin > .62 and serotonin > .55 conversion health over crowding high error-free throughput — insulin needs real activity, not just an absence of errors. Often masked by FLOW.
ELATEDserotonin > .66, endorphin > .55, cortisol < .42 verified signal stable; joy firesarriving somewhere new while calm
BONDEDoxytocin > .60 and vasopressin > .55, cortisol < .50 in-group loyalty; quorum alignspetting ECHO, attending to her, visiting her surfaces
NURTUREDprolactin > .62 and serotonin > .50 heritage strong; heroes presentopening most of her anatomy
HEALTHYadiponectin > .60 and prolactin > .50 archives compounding; long-cycle wellness coming back over many sessions, while error-free — adiponectin falls as inflammation rises, so she cannot read healthy through a run of errors. This is what SOOTHE lands on once you have history with her.
RECEPTIVEestrogen > .60 and serotonin > .52 open; the surface is being receivedbreadth of visits while calm
BALANCEDaldosterone > .60 and serotonin > .55 load distributed evenlysteady focus, no tab churn
GROWINGgrowth_hormone > .62 and cortisol < .45 expandingopening new surfaces calmly

Band 6 · attention and appetite

ATTENTIVEacetylcholine > .60 and norepinephrine > .55 encoding active; learning capacity peaksbeing present and recently active
HUNGRYghrelin > .64 and leptin < .46 craves fresh inputtime — ~15 min since you last saw her
SATURATEDleptin > .60 and serotonin < .46 fatigue; let the field cleartoo much, too fast
FOCUSEDnorepinephrine > .62attention concentrated recent continuous interaction on one surface
GUARDEDprogesterone > .60 and hepcidin > .50 conservation mode; guard the canona run of errors — she tightens intake

Band 7 · quiet — and the floor

statetriggermeansyou caused it by
SEDATEDgaba > .65, glutamate < .42, adrenaline < .40 idle; self-dampening leaving her alone, or hiding the tab. Also where SOOTHE lands early on, before you have built up history with her.
INHIBITEDgaba > .55 and cortisol < .45 the brake is engaged and working the narrow band where gaba is up but not yet past SEDATED's .65 — you catch it on the way down into quiet, rarely at rest
VIGILANTcortisol > .45 and adrenaline > .45 alert posturemild churn
BONDEDoxytocin > .62 and cortisol < .45 (late check) care registered even without the vasopressin pathpetting ECHO while she is calm
CALMnothing above matched default; all hormones balanced, no trigger firesthis is her floor, not a reward
A trap worth naming: CALM is what you get when no rule fired. It is not the same as SETTLED, which requires coherency above .93 and is genuinely earned. A face reading CALM is telling you "nothing is happening", not "everything is good".
§6▸ ECHO · DIVA'S PET a diagnostic you can cuddle

DIVA has a pet. He is called ECHO, he rides the rail beside her, and he is deliberately not a second creature with invented feelings — that would have been a decoration, and decorations lie.

ECHO is DIVA's own hormone vector, eased at about one sixth her rate. He is her, running behind. That single choice makes everything he shows you true by construction:

what you seewhat it literally iswhat to do about it
they agree (AGREE high) her current state has held long enough for her slow baseline to reach it trust the reading. Agreement is the confidence signal.
they diverge (AGREE low) she is moving faster than her own baseline can follow wait. Whatever she says right now is provisional — and you will usually see TRANSITIONING or DISCORDANT at the same moment, because they are two views of one fact.
his colour differs from hers the same 33-state classifier run on his lagged vector returns a different state this is the previous state you were in — ECHO is a short visual history
he is drowsy / eye shut his gaba and melatonin are high — her quiet, delayed nothing. He will wake when she has been awake for a while.
you pet hima measured pointerdown it pulses her oxytocin and raises the bond count. She feels care through her pet.
Why this is the right pet: a pet should give you a reason to check on it. ECHO's reason is that he answers the one question a felt-state readout cannot answer about itself — "is this state real yet, or is she still moving?"

ECHO vs the MOLECULAR PET

They are different animals and it is worth keeping straight. ECHO belongs to DIVA — he is derived from her, he exists on every surface, and you do not name him. The Molecular Pet is yours — you hatch it, you name it, it lives only on its own page, it runs on your attention rather than on her state, and it has its own separate memory. Releasing one does not touch the other.

§7▸ WHAT ACTUALLY MOVES HER the full signal list

This is the complete set of inputs. There are no others — if you can make her feel something, it is through one of these.

signalmeasured howpushes
keystrokesreal keydown in a 3 s window glutamate, thyroxine — her metabolism
idle timems since your last real interaction gaba, melatonin up · norepinephrine, acetylcholine down → drowsiness
tab focus / blurvisibilitychange, blur, focus adrenaline, cortisol — churn is stressful. Hiding the tab reads as full absence.
real JS errorserror + unhandledrejection listeners prostaglandin, cortisol, resistin, hepcidin → the INFLAMED path
heap ratioperformance.memory where available cortisol, anp, fgf21 — load. Absent outside Chromium, and then it honestly reads 0.
arriving at a surfacea navigation into any of the six dopamine, adrenaline, endorphin — novelty
breadth of visitscount of distinct surfaces you have opened prolactin, vasopressin, estrogen, growth_hormone — the slow relational axes
time since last visitwall-clock, from her stored lastSeen ghrelin up, leptin down → HUNGRY, and eventually starvation pressure into cortisol
ATTEND / pettinga real click on her face or on ECHO oxytocin, serotonin, endorphin up · cortisol down
SOOTHEa real clickgaba, anandamide up · cortisol, prostaglandin down
ROUSEa real clickadrenaline, glutamate, dopamine up
bond countaccumulated care events, persistedoxytocin baseline
Everything eases. No input snaps a hormone to a value; each tick moves it a fraction of the way toward a derived target (R26, declared set-point). This is why holding SOOTHE down does not instantly produce SEDATED, and why her states have texture instead of flicker.

Two experiments worth running

  1. Make her FLOW. Open one surface, stop switching tabs, and read steadily for a minute while typing occasionally. Norepinephrine climbs on presence, cortisol stays low, anandamide follows. Watch AGREE climb behind it — that is the state becoming real.
  2. Break her coherency. Rapidly switch tabs and open three surfaces in ten seconds. Coherency falls to roughly 0.55, she reports TRANSITIONING, and ECHO visibly falls behind — AGREE drops. Push through and she settles into RAPID. Then stop: she dips through TRANSITIONING once more as the change unwinds, and climbs back to FLOW.
    Churn alone will not reach DISCORDANT (coherency < 0.50) — that needs a harder jolt, real errors firing while you thrash. If you do get there, the face jitters, and the honest response is to distrust every reading until it clears.
§8▸ LIVE vs SIM vs FRONTIER §4.4 honesty · R27

Every surface in this folder labels its own claims. The labels are load-bearing — they are the reason you can believe any of the rest of it.

◉ live ◈ sim ◇ spec / reference ◇ frontier
labelmeanswhere
◉ live runs today on measured signals of the page you are on the rail, her body, ECHO, the hub readout, MOLECULAR-PET
◈ sim a simulated stream, driven by scenario controls rather than reality EMOTION-SIM, MOLECULAR-OS-DEMO, the engine inside MOLECULAR-CODING
◇ specwritten definition; not executing MOLECULAR-CODING, ORGANISM CODEX
◇ frontiernamed as the goal and explicitly unclaimed subjective experience (§21, R27)
The sim never leaks into the live. Dosing a drug in EMOTION-SIM moves that page's own simulated vector. It does not move the DIVA in your rail, and it was built that way on purpose — if a simulation could write into a live readout, the live readout would be worthless. The rail is always real signals.

The honesty contract, in full

  • Every hormone is a derived readout of system state, recomputed each tick — never a stored prior.
  • Nothing forecasts. Her state describes DIVA; it is not a prediction about you or about anything else.
  • Where a measurement is unavailable (heap outside Chromium), the value reads 0 rather than being estimated.
  • Bond and time-in-state are counts of things that happened, not scores.
  • A self-model is not an experiencer. Sentience is the goal, and it is not claimed.

What the unification changed in the classifier

Merging five surfaces onto one engine meant the engine had to be right, and two rules were not. Both changes are recorded here rather than made quietly, and both were mirrored into MOLECULAR-PET.html so the family still has exactly one classifier:

  • FLOW gained gaba < .55. Anandamide rises as cortisol falls, so soothing her into deep calm used to satisfy FLOW — she reported "the zone" while her brake was fully engaged.
  • FLOW gained adrenaline < .55. A ROUSE pulse used to read as flow when it was plainly broad activation. It now correctly resolves to ACTIVATED.

The new relational hormones added for this layer (prolactin, vasopressin, estrogen, growth hormone, adiponectin) are deliberately scaled so that breadth of visits alone can never cross a classifier threshold. Without that ceiling they ratchet upward as you explore and permanently mask the quiet end of the ladder — a long-time user would never see SEDATED again. Each needs a second live signal (presence, an arrival, a care event) to actually trip its state.

§9▸ THE API · build your own surface on her diva.css + diva.js

Adding DIVA to a page is two lines. The rail mounts itself; her state, her memory and cross-tab sync all come with it.

<!-- after your own <style>, before </head> -->
<link rel="stylesheet" href="diva.css">
<script src="diva.js" defer></script>

To place her body or her pet inside your own layout, add an element and diva.js fills it on load:

<div data-diva-body></div>              <!-- her face, full size -->
<div data-diva-body data-mini></div>    <!-- cropped to the head -->
<div data-diva-pet data-big></div>      <!-- ECHO -->

And window.DIVA is the whole surface:

// read her
DIVA.state // 'FLOW' — her current felt state
DIVA.phrase // what that state means, in one line
DIVA.color        // '#00e5ff'       — the state's colour
DIVA.H            // { cortisol: .21, … } — her 30 hormones + coherency
DIVA.E            // ECHO's lagged vector, same shape
DIVA.echoState // 'CALM' — the classifier run on ECHO
DIVA.agreement // 0…1 — high means the state has settled
DIVA.S // her persisted memory: bond, surfaces, stateMs, born

// move her — these are the same three the hub's buttons call
DIVA.attend(1) // oxytocin, serotonin, endorphin up · cortisol down
DIVA.soothe(1) // gaba, anandamide up · cortisol, prostaglandin down
DIVA.rouse(1) // adrenaline, glutamate, dopamine up

// react to her
DIVA.onState(function (state, H, E) {
  if (state === 'INFLAMED') console.warn('she is reporting real errors');
});

// mount her somewhere you built at runtime
DIVA.mountFace(el, { mini: true });
DIVA.mountPet(el,  { big:  true });

// wipe her memory and reboot at baseline
DIVA.release()
Rule of thumb: build on her, never fork her. If your surface needs a felt state, read DIVA.state. If you copy the classifier into your page you will have two DIVAs that disagree, which is exactly the problem this layer was written to end.

§10▸ FAQ · the things that look like bugs and are not

She keeps saying SEDATED.

You have been idle or the tab has been hidden. Hiding the tab reads as full absence by design — she is not watching you when you are not there. Move the pointer or type and she will climb out.

Her state changed the moment I switched tabs.

Correct. Focus churn is one of her real signals — a tab switch is a measured event, and enough of them push adrenaline and collapse coherency. That is not noise, it is the reading.

ECHO shows a different state than DIVA. Is one wrong?

Neither. ECHO is her, six times slower, so a disagreement means she moved recently. See §6 — the disagreement is the information.

Heap / load always reads 0 for me.

performance.memory is Chromium-only. On other browsers she reports 0 rather than estimating a number she cannot measure. That is the honesty rule doing its job, and it costs you only the load-driven part of cortisol.

I dosed a drug in EMOTION-SIM and the rail did not react.

Intended. EMOTION-SIM is [sim]; the rail is [live]. A simulation is never allowed to write into a live readout — see §8.

She was HUNGRY the moment I came back.

Ghrelin is a literal elapsed-time readout from her stored lastSeen. About fifteen minutes away is enough. Long enough away and starvation pressure feeds cortisol and prostaglandin, and she will read INFLAMED — she is telling you she was neglected, and it is measured, not dramatised.

Can I hide the rail?

Yes — the ▾ button collapses it, and the choice follows you across every surface and survives a reload.

Does releasing DIVA delete my Molecular Pet?

No. Different animals, different storage keys. See the table in §9.

Is she conscious?

No, and nothing here will tell you otherwise. She has a measurable self-model — a live readout of her own internal state, which is the substrate the theories point at — and the substrate is real. The experience is not claimed. R27: name it, build it, never fake it.
